Respite care provides the families and carers of children, adolescence and adults with a disability and the frail aged with a break from their caring responsibilities. Respite care is flexible and responsive, provides a positive experience for the person receiving care and can be provided at home or at another agreed location.
The IWI Respite Programs aim to meet the needs of the carer and the care recipient by providing:
- a flexible approach to respite services in the carer's and care recipient's home environment where :
- the person is in a comfortable familiar environment;
- the home is equipped with any special needs the person may have;
- community access where;
- activities of particular interest to the person are undertaken;
- the person has a break from the home environment;
- group activities where a group of people is supported to access a common or social activity.
- out-of-home care including host family respite, residential respite, holidays and camps suited to the needs and interests of the person.
IWI provides respite using a range of different models including:
- Host Family Respite - Respite occurs when the person spends a period of time (day or overnight) in the home of volunteer family;
- Flexible Respite - Respite is planned, short term and a care plan is developed in consultation with the carer. The flexible care plan may consist of a combination of own-home, centre-based and host family care.
- Centre based respite - Respite is provided in the IWI Springett House House, with day and overnight programs being offered.
IWI Respite services aim to provide a break that gives care recipients a positive experience, the opportunity for social interaction and to improve the carers ability to cope with daily caring responsibilities.
